The Stereomaster SM2-170 is the translation of the ultimate puristic high end stereo system into a contemporary on-wall system. Its main driver setup is a two-way concept, featuring a ‚dream team’ combination of Scan Speak’s unsurpassed beryllium tweeter with the legendary 21M carbon/paper mid woofer from the same Danish maker. The quality of these acoustic gems is being leveraged by Lyravox’ multi-channel direct amplification and lossless DSP-based signal processing, including ultra precise cross over, equalisation and time alignment. The latter is also applied to the 170s auxiliary side drivers, which allow it to reproduce the depth and width of the original musical performance, utilizing the wall for defined reflections. Thanks to the wall coupling of the system, the superbly controlled bass reproduction of the 170 is being boosted and ideally dispersed into the listening room. The 170 may therefore be the ultimate high end audio solution in rooms up to 45 square meters, without the need for floorstanding speakers, heavy equipment or visible cables.
Headline of the Steromaster Introduction Leaflet, 2013
As one of the major technical advances in audio, the direct amplification of a speaker driver eliminates distortions, phase shifts and decoupling caused by traditional passive crossover networks. In combination with DSP processing, not only a more exact crossover is possible, but also perfect time and phase alignments, more refined equalisation, dynamics-dependent corrections, and room-dependent corrections.
In order to achieve the ideal of a lossless audio chain, Lyravox integrates a high resolution streamer into its systems. The direct integration avoids sonic bottlenecks, thus improving the overall sound quality. In addition, the streamer allows the playback of high resolution audio files (from servers, external storages, or from the internet) which represent today’s best sounding and most convenient music sources, especially when available in studio standard. The German made streamer is organically merged with the system’s DSP/driver engine on the output side and all of the system’s interfaces on the input side.
Along with ceramics and diamond, beryllium represents the best possible diaphragm material for a dynamic tweeter. It is far superior to any other metal dome in terms of stiffness, inner damping, ringing, speed of sound dispersion, and distortion. In comparison to harder materials such as ceramics and diamond it has some advantages in terms of speed and weight – making the sonic results of a top end beryllium driver preferrable for some tastes or component combinations. The Scan Speak® beryllium tweeters deserve to be called the best of their kind.
In a real-life music performance, the sonic waves of musical instruments are being dispersed in all directions, not only towards the listener. The dispersion of traditional loudspeakers with front drivers is therefore not fully representative of real music. Lyravox systems (except studio monitors) are equipped with additional drivers for the projection of the ‚ambient’ part of the music, partly through individual DSP-controlled channels.
Enjoying proper stereo from a traditional system requires sitting at the sweet spot of the infamous ‚stereo triangle’, making audiophile listening a lonesome hobby. The Lyravox Stereomaster range employs an acoustic projection that reverses the stereo triangle: with the main frontal tweeters of the system angled inside plus additional tweeters on each side, the listener always faces two tweeters, at any position within the room – enjoying stereo sound throughout the room.
The wall mounting of a Stereomaster is not only beneficial for the aesthetics and space consumption within a living space, it also helps to achieve a well-defined sound projection. Most of all, a Stereomaster benefits from the fact that its positioning within the room is set, so that – unlike a traditional speaker – it can be optimised for it. Second, the wall offers a reflection plane for the side drivers of a Stereomaster, allowing a stereo image projection which is much wider than the unit itself. And finally, for a controlled and defined bass dispersion there is no better situation than having your back to a solid wall.
A large part of a loudspeaker’s quality is determined by its enclosure. All Lyravox systems are built to proven high end standards. This refers to the choice and combination of the cabinet materials, cabinet geometry, internal bracing, finely tuned damping, internal absorbers (for the minimization of electronic corrections), internal sound and pressure dispersion, midrange cabinet ventilation, reflex channel optimization, external diffraction and optimal wall or floor coupling.
